2025 has been a year where the EXIOBASE team has gone back to publishing updates of their database, as we can see from their zenodo node: https://zenodo.org/records/15689391. This is definitely good news for many, and the EXIOBASE consortium is now working on providing annual updates too.

Version 3.9.4, for the year 2020, has now been released for openLCA, and we would like to highlight a couple of things:

  • Library version: This version of EXIOBASE is based on the product-by-product dataset for the year 2020. To increase calculation efficiency this database will be provided not just as a standard zolca file but also as a library. A library in openLCA is a precalculated database that allows for faster calculations for users.
  • EF Method: This version of EXIOBASE does not come with a native set of Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) methods. For this reason, we have integrated the impact method EF3.1 into this version of EXIOBASE, to help our users.

You can find the documentation of the implementation of EXIOBASE in openLCA under “documents” tab in openLCA Nexus: https://nexus.openlca.org/database/exiobase

For a very complete documentation of what changed since v3.8, we recommend to look at the official site for EXIOBASE: https://zenodo.org/records/15689391.  We would also like to make our users aware of upcoming changes in the licensing for commercial use by the EXIOBASE EULA.
