The sLCA training equips participants with the knowledge and tools to conduct an sLCA and use the Product Social Impact Life Cycle Assessment (PSILCA) database. Participants will learn about the theory and technical framework behind sLCA, gain skills to use the openLCA software, and apply these learnings in various case studies. Participants will also become familiar with the structure of PSILCA, including its input-output database and social indicators. Additionally, the training provides an introduction to working with openLCA from the perspective of social LCA, with skills that are transferable to environmental LCAs as well.

Session 1: social LCA theory, openLCA in a nutshell and the PSILCA database
- Background, aim, historical overview
- What is S-LCA? and technical framework
- openLCA in a nutshell: flows, processes, product systems, projects and impact calculation
- The PSILCA database: introduction to MRIO databases, structure and features of PSILCA, impact assessment with PSILCA
Session 2: social hotspot screening in openLCA and case study
- Social Indicators
- Social hotspots screening: assessment of an economic sector and comparison of sectors
- Calculation and interpretation of social hotspots
- S-LCA case study with PSILCA: Goal and scope, Inventory and data collection
Session 3: S-LCA case studies and special topics
- Working with workers hours as activity variable as well as raw variables in PSILCA
- Impact assessment
- Results interpretation
- The SOCA database: a combined database for social and environmental LCA
Who should attend
Whether you work in industry, consulting, or research, the training provides a practical foundation for sLCA. Prior knowledge on the openLCA software is expected.
