What’s new in version 3?
New BAFU:2025+ESU background database
Version 3 uses the BAFU:2025+ESU background database. It is based on BAFU:2025 and has been extended with additional processes required for food-related life cycle assessments and other ESU applications.
The background database covers relevant energy, transport, materials, water and waste-treatment supply chains. It is included with the ESU World Food database, so no separate background-database licence is required.
Updated and extended background data
The background database includes selected updates and extensions, such as revised aluminium production data and additional processes relevant for food-related LCAs.
These additions improve the coverage of supporting supply chains and provide a consistent background system for modelling food products and consumption activities.
Database content
The release includes:
- food-related life cycle inventory datasets;
- the BAFU:2025+ESU background database;
- unit processes, system processes and LCIA datasets;
- supporting documentation and dataset information;
- a ready-to-use openLCA database.
